We structure our sessions with the first 45 minutes dedicated to tackling reading comprehension. In most cases 1-3 learners will be paired with a volunteer and is tasked to read their texts out loud with their group/partner. To avoid pressure on individuals we put groups together based on assigned text-difficulty. We make sure to recognize any hiccups or roadblocks that we see with our learners and give effective advice on how to push through them. We also provide materials liked covered overlays to improve focus and try to prevent the jumbling of words. We tailor the skill-level of all texts to each individual learner from the diagnostic test they are required to take before attending their first session. We pay close attention to progress and setbacks to accordingly adjust the difficult of texts if needed. We also encourage a engaging experience the whole time our learners are with us so we give them the option to choose from multiple genres of texts like Human Science, Fiction, History, Sports, etc.
We also recognize that being told to reading for a long period of time might feel discouraging. Dyslexia gives the human brain a special spark of creativity and we seek to hone this skill. Therefore, that is why we also include a 15-minute segment of creativity. Our volunteers prepare a collection of different activities putting their minds to the test. Our widely praised activity amongst parents and learners is our mini Shark Tank game. In this game learners will all be introduced a problem and will have 10 minutes to create an idea or solution to the problem. These ideas can be as crazy or practical as you can imagine (there are no limits). At the end, everyone will present what they came up with and our volunteers will award the best idea.
FAQs
What does my kid need to be prepared with for sessions?
Eulexic provides all materials needed for our workshops and do not require learners to bring any specific materials. All we ask is to bring a respectful attitude and a determined mindset to learn.
What fees need to be paid before my kid can participate in Eulexic’s program?
None! There are no fees whatsoever. We cover all costs for all materials and private spaces used.
When and where are sessions taken place?
For the Richmond chapter we mostly frequently hold sessions in reserved rooms in the Twin Hickory Library and Glen Allen Library. In the scenario of a change in location parents will be informed at least 2 days prior. We hold sessions every week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with slots open from 9am-1pm. *Note: Learners can not attend more than one session per day to give a fair distribution of attention amongst all participants.
How do I know if the program is actually working?
All of our volunteers are trained to recognize comprehensive progress and track it in a spreadsheet. We record the frequency of mistakes while reading and give learners a '“flow rating” every session which measures how smooth learners were able to read through their text. Your kids data we be only open to parents and the volunteers.
